Constipation can mean hard stools, difficulty passing stool or a bowel pattern that is less frequent than usual for you. It is uncomfortable and sometimes embarrassing to discuss, but a clear description helps. Do not rely on repeated cleansing products without finding out why the problem is happening.
1. Describe your usual and current pattern
Note stool frequency, consistency, straining and when the change started. Mention travel, recent diet changes and any new medicine. A person’s normal pattern varies, so compare with your own usual routine rather than an online rule that everyone must go at the same time.
2. Build a manageable daily habit
Allow unhurried toilet time and avoid repeatedly ignoring the urge to go. Discuss suitable fluids, gradual fibre intake and movement with your clinician. If you have fluid restrictions or a condition affecting your diet, ask for individual advice instead of following a general water target.
3. Avoid dependence on unreviewed products
List all laxatives, powders, teas and herbal mixtures you use, including how often you take them. More than one product may contain similar ingredients. Ask how long any recommended medicine should be used and what to do if it does not help.
4. Get a changing pattern assessed
Blood in the stool, persistent abdominal pain, unexplained weight loss or a continuing change in bowel habit deserves medical review. Severe pain with vomiting or inability to pass gas needs urgent assessment. Keep a brief record and bring it to consultation so the next step is based on your symptoms rather than a generic cleanse.
Before your appointment
Write down your main concern and when it started.

Some medicines can affect bowel habits. Bring your full list and ask for a review; do not stop them independently.
